Brick Block, Tick Tock

Brick Block, Tick Tock is a multidisciplinary project that examines systems of construction—both physical and social—through the material language of the brick.

Working across performance, sculpture, and installation, the project considers how identity is built over time through repetition, labor, and inherited structures. The brick operates both as a structural unit and as a marker of time—each element registering a gesture, an action, a duration.

Bricks are stacked into temporary forms that exist between stability and collapse: tables, seats, partitions, and towers that hover between function and failure. These structures reflect systems that appear stable yet remain contingent, shaped by histories of labor, gender, and power.

Referencing the artist’s family history of bricklaying and ceramic production, the work reclaims construction as a site of agency—where rebuilding becomes an act of resistance.

A key element within the installation is a grouping of 36 bricks, referencing the age of Ana Mendieta at the time of her death. Arranged in relation to the artist’s height, this gesture functions as both tribute and marker—connecting the physical weight of the material to the ongoing realities of gender-based violence and the silencing of women.

Accompanying the work is a sound piece, Tick Tock, composed of a synchronized clock and heartbeat. The rhythm underscores the temporal dimension of the project, emphasizing the slow, continuous process through which systems are built, maintained, and ultimately transformed.

Positioned within the broader practice, Brick Block, Tick Tock extends the investigation from the body into architecture and collective structures—considering how identities are constructed through external systems, and how those systems might be dismantled and rebuilt, one unit at a time.
